Introduction of Automobiles
(modern era)
(modern era)
The word Automobile in itself
means the thing which can be moved automatically or in other words
automatically mobile instrument. To make an instrument Automobile we need a
force or energy i.e. Engine so that it can move itself. Engine is the main and
the primary resource required to build an Automobile.
Let’s take a shot glimpse of
the history of Automobile industry. Around 18th and 19th
century many efforts were made by different engineers to build automobiles but
they ended up in many limitations in them. Previously they didn’t found out a
proper fuel that can generate proper amount of energy, they used gunpowder as a
fuel but it didn’t work out. Etienne lenior, a Frenchmen was the first to
patent a practical gas engine in 1860 and drove a car based on that design.
Around 1885 Daimler and Benz made various vehicles and experimented them. In
1888 Steinway and Sons piano factory, made a deal Daimler about U.S.
manufacturing rights and by September they had deal. By 1891 Daimler Motor co.,
owned by Steinway, was producing petrol engines for tramway cars and boats. On
the other side Henry Ford had an engine running by 1893 but it was 1896 before
he built his first car. By the end of the year Ford had sold his first car,
which he called a Quadracycle, for $200 and used the money to build another
one. With the financial backing of the Mayor of Detroit, William C. Maybury and
other wealthy Detroiters, Ford formed the Detroit Automobile Company in 1899. A
few prototypes were built but no production cars were ever made by this
company. It was dissolved in January 1901. Ford would not offer a car for sale
until 1903.
If we talk about the post
World War II period and the modern era we can see a great development and
growth in the terms of technology used in the cars.
Many companies were engaged
in making Automobiles like we had General motors, Ford, GMC, Mercedes-Benz
(collaborated), BMW, Toyota,
Honda, Fiat, Volkswagen, Rolls Royce, Bentley etc.
We are having several types(segments)
in cars based on their size and engine i.e. like compact cars, hatchbacks,
Luxury cars, MUVs(multi-utility vehicle) , SUVs (sports utility vehicle) and
heavy duty pick-up trucks. Based on their fuel requirements we mainly have
petrol(gasoline), diesel and electricity
as the main component of energy for the engines but nowadays we are also using
CNG”(compressed natural gas) and LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) as the fuel
components. To ensure that the air pollution made by such engines should lower
various countries had have prevailed various guidelines in which every
manufacturer has to go under such productions. For example we have Euro II,
Euro III etc types of engines which produce less carbon monoxide and other
harmful gases.
So this was a shot Introduction
to the Automobile sector of the modern era. Hope you find this worth reading.
